I use Fighter Factory Classic, which requires them to use .pcx format. More recent versions of Fighter Factory allow the use of .png files, but PCX is more or less the standard. Like all other sprites, objects and animations, they must have 256 colors (for PCX format). You can either use the built in template that fighter Factory has. Or, you can create an .sff file from scratch. .SFF is the format MUGEN uses to read sprites, animations and the like per stage & character created.

When making Stage sprites work, they must be indexed, and they must be scaled to match the type of stage you’re doing. This is the part that requires a LOT of trial & error on your part, as there’s no easy way to solve that, without having to do some scaling and possible frankenspriting. For mugen 1.1, you can safely use .png files, but I would need to specifically create a 1.1 type stage for that to be an accurate assumption. All of my stages are 1.1 compatible, despite I make them for Hires Winmugen Plus.

When adding in parts and layers and the like, it’s better to test as much as possible, until you get the desired results. This 1.0 & 101 tutorial by OldGamer should give you the results you need, since he specializes more with 1.0 & 1.1 than I do.
